The Han Class Submarine (The Type 091 or 09-I in the PRC) was the first Nuclear submarine class built by the PRC for the People's Liberation Army Navy Submarine Force. The Han Class suffered from its design, being noisy compared to Soviet and American Submarines as well as having poor radiation shielding. The Han Class could also not fire missiles from below the water.
In late October 1994, a Han Class stalked the Kitty Hawk Battle Group in the Yellow Sea. This caused a standoff between the US Navy and the PLAN.
